This is Book 3 of Listening Course. It contains altogether 36 lessons, with 5 lessons as one unit. Following each unit there is a review lesson. Each lesson has two sections: listening comprehension and extensive listening. The first section is subsequently divided into (1) “Listen and choose the correct answers”; and (2) “Listen to the dialogue (or passage) and do the exercises”. The first part mainly focuses on single sentences or simple dialogues; the vocabulary and sentence patterns used in this part have, mostly, appeared in Book 3 of A Course in the Chinese Language. The second part consists mainly of dialogues and passages of about 400 characters long. This is the most important part of each lesson. The extensive listening section contains two short passages, the contents of which vary from lesson to lesson and are mostly related to the content of the second exercise in the listening comprehension section. The exercises in the extensive listening section are comparatively simple.

In order for the user of this book to have a clear understanding of our purpose in compiling this book, we would like to add a few explanations:

1. Class hours: Each lesson is designed for 2 class hours.

2. About the new words:

(1) New words are picked out on the basis of the vocabulary in Books 1 and 2 of A Course in the Chinese Language and Books 1 and 2 of Listening Course. If a word has already appeared in those books, it will not be considered a new word and therefore will not be listed. Not all new words in the extensive listening section are listed—only those which may affect comprehension are listed.

(2) The teaching of new words: The instructor should explain the new words in the listening comprehension section before playing the tapes. And the students are encouraged to preview the lessons before attending the class. Students are not required to learn all the new words in the extensive listening section.

3. In the teacher’s book there are notes on the “key points” in the second part of the listening comprehension section. The instructor may make his/her own decision if this should be used.
